William M. Lewis, 77, Lenexa, Kansas, passed away on Thursday April 14, 2006 at his place of residence. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Lewis was born April 19, l928 in Englewood, NJ. He attended schools there and graduated Dwight Morrow High School in 1946. He was also a graduate of the University of Omaha, Omaha, NE. He was a Regular Army Lieutenant Colonel and retired at Fort Leavenworth in 1972 after twenty years service. His overseas tours of duty included stations in Europe, Korea, and Vietnam. He also served at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD., Fort Riley, KS, Fort Benning, GA., Fort Eustice, VA., Fort Rucker, AL and Fort Leavenworth, KS. where he was a faculty member at the U. S. Army Command & General Staff College. He was a Senior Army Aviator certified in both fixed wing and rotary wing multi-engine aircraft. His military awards include the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Medal.
In 1972, Mr. Lewis and his wife, Joan, opened a new company, DorMail Co., in Leavenworth, KS; an art gallery and needlepoint shop, which they ran until 1980 when they sold it to the present owners. Following the sale of his business, Mr. Lewis was engaged in real estate and insurance and banking. He retired from the flagship UMB Bank in 1994.
He was a past Vice President and board member of the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce, a past member of the Leavenworth Rotary Club and a life member of the Alpine, Tilden, Tenakill Lodge, and F&AM of Closter, New Jersey, a past president of the Fort Leavenworth National Sojourners and a member of the Abdallah Shrine Temple of Kansas City, KS.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Joan Lewis of the home, his mother, Jennie L. Lewis, Cincinnati, OH, a son, William D. Lewis and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Olathe, KS, a daughter, Robyn Lewis of Overland Park, KS, one granddaughter, five grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
