Werner Toews

October 28, 1925 — February 22, 2017

Werner "Vern" G. Toews, age 91, passed away peacefully with family by his side, on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017 at Hospice House in Olathe, KS. Family will gather to celebrate his life privately. Donations can be made to Hospice House of Olathe (913-791-4216). They provided exceptional peace and comfort to Vern and his family.

Vern was born in Saskatchewan, Canada to Gerhard and Anna (Elias) Toews on October 28th, 1925 on a dark and stormy night. Vern's life story could fill many books! His family moved to Germany when Vern was 14 years old. He spoke several languages, served bravely in WWII, was a member of the British military police as an interpreter, and later served in the army, stationed in Germany, during the Korean War. He arrived with his sister, Victoria, in 1949 to live with family in Minnesota. Once he arrived to Kansas City, he was a devoted husband to his wife, Shirley, and they shared 43 years of marriage in Olathe, KS. He owned several shoe stores and then worked in furniture sales and retired at the age of 75 years old.

Vern enjoyed traveling often with his wife, gardening, reading avidly, tasting a good meal and all desserts, ballroom dancing, collecting stamps and coins, keeping up with current worldly news, and spending time with his family and friends. He was exceptionally kind, charismatic, clever and quick-witted, funny, supportive, and loving to all those lucky enough to have him in their lives.

The day he returned from WWII to his parents' home after escaping a prisoner of war camp and walking across Germany, his mother declared that day, July 5th, 1945, "his second birthday". On February 22nd, we know Vern began celebrating "his third birthday".

He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Anne (Toews) Hiscott.

Vern is survived by his wife Shirley, his sister Victoria and her children: Betty (Bill), and Jim (Stacey), his nephew Stephen (Debbie), his children: Michael, Julie (Mark), Katherine (Mick), Martin (Steve), Mary (Gene), and Victor; grandchildren: Veronica, Elizabeth, Kristine, Cecilia, Glenn, Emily, Ron, Courtney, Carli, Ryan, and Nicolette; great grandchildren: Danica, Ezra, and soon Atticus, and many great nieces and nephews.

Dear Vern, loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, and friend, you have taken the ultimate trip! We love you and will hold your memory forever.
