Wanda Marie Herbold

January 9, 1931 — June 11, 2020

Wanda Marie Herbold, age 89 of Olathe, Kansas passed away Thursday, June 11, 2020 at the Olathe Hospice House after being admitted at KU Medical Center for a brief stay. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday June 19, 2020 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, KS. A private family service will take place Saturday, June 20, 2020 at Penwell-Gabel. A Celebration of Life will be held at College Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, July 11, at 10:00 am.

Wanda was born on January 9, 1931, in Kingsley, Iowa to Leslie and Marie Woodward. She started and finished school in Pierson, Iowa. On June 13, 1948, Wanda married Donald Herbold. While farming for the next eight years, their four children were born. In 1956, the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where Don started his career as a Federal Meat Inspector. Don was transferred, and the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, and Wanda was a stay-at-home mom while their children were growing up. In 1972 they moved to Olathe, Kansas. Wanda was employed by the Johnson County District Attorney's office as the Records Supervisor and retired from there in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leslie and Marie Woodward, her sisters Dorothy Weathers and Lillian Kehrberg, and her three-year-old brother Dean.

Wanda is survived by her husband of 72 years, Donald D. Herbold of the home, and children Julie Drummond (Bob), Jolene Knight (Jerry), Randy Herbold (Brenda), Jacque Main (Dan), eight grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Wanda lettered in basketball all four years of high school. Because of that, she was an avid KU and MNU basketball fan. Wanda was an ardent supporter of the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's activities. She would be in attendance at any activity they were involved in, if at all possible.

Family and church were the bedrock of Wanda's life. She was born and raised in the Church of the Nazarene and was very active in the church, especially in music. Wanda was a member of College Church of the Nazarene for 48 years. Her greatest desire is for her family, for whom she prayed daily, to be reunited in Heaven. She was an ambassador for Jesus to the world around her.

Wanda loved to travel and anytime the car was revved up she was ready to go. She and Don traveled to all 50 states, the Canadian provinces, and several countries. Wanda also enjoyed gospel music whether it was attending gospel concerts or listening to her CD's.

Wanda was the ultimate extrovert and loved to have fun and laugh. If there was a gathering, you could usually find her in the middle of it having a great time. She never met a stranger and she loved unconditionally. If you met Wanda once, you instantly felt like you were part of her family. Her laughter was contagious. Her spunk and zest for life are traits everyone who met her will always remember.

Wanda will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the College Church Mercy Project or the Cunningham Student Center at MidAmerica Nazarene University.
