Verlyn Boyd "Sue" Henton, 78, of Olathe, passed away on March 1, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.
Verlyn was born on December 7, 1943 to William and Imogene (Rickson) Henton in Manhattan, KS. Verlyn grew up in and around Riley County, Kansas and graduated from Riley County High School in 1963.
He moved from Manhattan to Stanley, Kansas briefly before settling in Olathe and starting his family.
Ver worked as a Bus Driver for Continental Trailways for over twenty years and then hauled freight for Trident and SuperVan before retiring in 2005.
On May 26, 1970, he married Phyllis Jean Ricklefs, and they made their home in Olathe, Kansas. Verlyn and Phyllis raised their children and grandchildren in the house that he built in Central Olathe.
When he wasn't working and especially after he retired, he enjoyed planting and growing flowers and vegetables, birdwatching, and tinkering in his garage with various woodworking projects and crafts. Ver had a talent for finding new uses for old stuff. He built greenhouses out of old patio doors, he built a shed out of old fencing, he made stands, cages, and beds for his gardens from scrap materials. Ver was a lifelong K-State Wildcat's fan and was proud of it.
Ver was happiest when he was spending time with his 4 grandchildren. He was a regular at his grandchildrens' concerts, dance recitals, plays, musicals, and ballgames. He didn't know a stranger and always struck up a conversation with other parents and grandparents at the events.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, children Tammy and John Forsyth (Edgerton, KS); Leslie and Nathan Ellsworth (Olathe, KS) and Brian Henton (Olathe, KS), grandchildren John Daniel Forsyth III, Maddie Ellsworth, Allie Ellsworth and Wyatt Ellsworth, brothers Valgene and Norma Henton (Dodge City, KS); Gary and Linda Henton (Manhattan, KS)and sister Karen and Willie Smith (Manhattan, KS).
He was preceded in death by his parents William L and Imogene G. Henton .
Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.
