Velma Emma Ward, 99, of Olathe, KS passed away Fri. May 16, 2014 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Olathe Hospice of Olathe Medical Center.
Velma was born Sept 7, 1914 to Mabel and Asa Carroll on the Kells Homestead in Haskell Co., KS. She attended schools in Haskell Co. and Garden City, KS. On Sept 19th, 1931 she married Johnnie Louis Ward in Lakin, KS. They moved to Fredonia, KS where she helped Johnnie with the farming and was a housewife. Velma and Johnnie moved to Garden City in 1946 where they raised their children. Later in life Velma worked at a women's clothing store for several years. She enjoyed cooking and sewing, was an active member of Eastern Star, a Girl Scout leader and liked to work on crafts. After moving to Olathe she resided at the Olathe Towers, where she was an active volunteer in the sewing club and dining services.
She is survived by her daughter Mildred "Millie" Yount of Olathe, KS, daughter in law Loletta of Tempe, AZ, brother Kenneth Carroll of Garden City, KS, sisters Kathryn Yardley and Doris Sperry both of Garden City, KS. 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband in Dec. 1975, son Donald Ward, her sisters Mary Ball, Reva Robinson, Vera Van Winkle (her twin), her brother Charles Carroll and son in law Doyle Yount.
