Thomas Willard Sellars

December 20, 1936 — June 18, 2023

Thomas Willard Sellars, 86, of Belton, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, June 18, 2023. He was born on December 20, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to Willard and Gertrude (Bardeleben) Sellars.

Tom registered for the draft in 1955. In September 1956 he received "Greetings from the President of the United States". Rather than do the Army, Tom joined the United States Air Force. He served over 20 years in several different countries and situations.

After leaving military life, Tom met Mary. Before she would marry him, she told him he had to have a real job. He was sworn into Federal Government service on April 9, 1984. He worked for the Department of Defense for 20 years.

Tom's total service to his country, over 43 years, 7 months, 12 days and 8 hours, but who's keeping track? (Tom's direct quote)

While living in Colorado, Tom took up Model Railroading. The train club was a large part of his life. They would take trips on the different narrow-gauge lines that run throughout Colorado. The group took one trip a year for over 15 years. Cruising became a large part of his life in his early 70's. He moved to Belton, Missouri when he announced he could no longer take care of 3 acres of land in Colorado. So, we moved to 10 acres. Go figure. Since now we had the property, why not join in the granddaughter's passion for horses. He fell in love with the Arabian Breed. He picked the name of the yet to be born foal before he passed. MT Black Gold is what he chose.

In 1979 he met his soulmate, Mary. They spent over 40 amazing years together, hardly leaving each other's side.

Tom is survived by his loving wife Mary Sellars; Brother Jim Sellars (Ingrid) of Tucson, AZ; stepbrother Dick Houts of Knoxville, TN; five children; two stepchildren; 26 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He loved them all in his own way.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas City Hospice House 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City MO 64145.
