Brother Thomas Francis Akers, born January 18, 1938, in Tallman, NY, died February 26, 2006. Bro. Thomas was a co-founder and member of the Society of St. Augustine originally established in Amarillo, TX, and then transferred to the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Bro. Thomas was previously a member of the Augustinian Recollect Friars, Province of St. Augustine. He entered religious life in 1956 at Tagaste Monastery, Suffern, NY, and made his Novitiate and Professed Vows at the former Monastery of St. Augustine in Kansas City, KS. He was a graduate of Donnelly College, K.C., KS. He was a received as a member of the Order of Knights of St. Lazarus in Bath, England. Brother Thomas' assignments included: vocation director for the Province of St. Augustine; the first religious brother elected to the provincial council of the Augustinian Recollect Friars headquartered in West Orange, NJ; director of the book store at Donnelly College, K.C., KS; Procurator of Tagaste Monastery; Administrator of the Society of St. Augustine; financial administrator of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Amarillo, TX; financial administrator of St. Joseph Parish, Amarillo, TX; in residence at St. Paul Church, Olathe, KS, and in residence at the Villa of St. Augustine, Kansas City, KS. Bro. Tom was known for his wit, candor, and loyalty to his principles. He was endeared by friends and loved by his family and religious community. He was preceded in death by parents Harold D. and Angela Akers. He is survived by one brother, Harold Akers and wife Mary, two sisters, Audrey Gannon and Angela Metzger and husband Charles, and several nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 2, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, KS: friends may call from 6 to 8pm; Rosary begins at 7. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10am Friday, March 3, at St. Paul's. Burial will be at Ramapo Cemetery, Ramapo, NY. Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Augustine Scholarship Fund, 3008 S. 34th, K.C., KS.
