Susan Commons

August 19, 1946 — November 12, 2011

Susan M. Commons, born August 19, 1946 in Corvallis, Oregon to Shirley and Howard Commons, continued on her journey from this life on November 12, 2011. Her colorful and diverse life was a source of inspiration and awe to all she encountered. She retired from the United States Army in 1999 as an Sergeant First Class with a total of 28 years of service. Her distinguished career began in 1966 as a member of the Women's Army Corp and ended in 1999 as part of the Active Army Reserve, during which she served 16 months in Long Binh, Viet Nam, served as a Sergeant to both the motor pool and records at multiple assigned locations. She was also a member of the Old Guard- being the only female of the Old Guard to lay a presidential wreath as well as being the only woman of the Guard that was a Viet Nam Veteran. After retiring from the military, she was a truck driver for Schneider Trucking and Fresh Warehousing of St. Louis, Missouri. She was an active member of Metropolitan Community Church of St. Louis for 20+ years. She enjoyed playing the piano, the clarinet, reading a good book ( which was most of the time), fishing for rainbow trout with her brother and afamily, and was always laughing about something. Those that will miss her greatly include her Partner, April Peet of Osage City, KS, Mother, Shirley Commons of Grants Pass, OR, Brother, Gary Commons and family of Grants Pass, OR, Sisters, Jeanette Cook and family of Weston MA and Mary McKie of Rochester NY; Stepson, Michael Scott Castledine (Madison, dtr) of FL and numerous close friends, Juanita Schmidt, AZ, Rusty Helmer, LA, Nancy McMillian, WA, Sandy Snyder, OR, and Tonda Rosengarten (Michelle), Lenexa, KS.
