Sumi Coones, 82, of Olathe, KS passed away March 22, 2019. A private graveside service will be held at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Overland Park, KS.
Sumi was born July 28, 1936 in Chinen-Son, Okinawa to Shige and Ichido Chinen. Her life was devoted to her husband & her family. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her children & all of her grandkids. Sumi's proudest accomplishment beyond her family was receiving her United States citizenship in 1972. She loved being an American citizen and cherished her right to vote. Sumi loved to cook, sew & enjoyed watching all types of sports especially her Kansas Jayhawks basketball, KC Royals and KC Chiefs. She especially enjoyed going to sporting events for the grandchildren and never missed a game or an event when it involved one of her grandkids.
She was preceded in her death by her parents, her brother Shigenori Chinen, her grandson Jared Coones and her daughter in-law, Jayne Coones.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years Charles D. Coones and 4 children, Tom Coones & his wife Annette, Mike Coones & his wife Debra, Judy Porting, Carol Brewer & her husband Tom. 9 grandchildren, Matthew Oskvig, Meghan Cook & her husband Stephen, Bryan Porting, Stephen Oskvig, Logan Coones, Daniel Oskvig, Adam Oskvig, Maddie Coones & John Coones. 1 great grandchild Raelynn Cook. Sumi is also survived by her sister Toyo in Oxnard, CA & her brothers Yasanori Chinen & Yasanobu Chinen in Tokyo, Japan.
