Steven "Steve" Sayers

Steven “Steve” Sayers, 75, 5’-10”, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025. He was born on September 16, 1949, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Wilbur and Evelyn (Leybold) Sayers.

Steve graduated from Lincoln High School and Nebraska Vocational Technical School (now Southeast Community College) before enlisting in the Air National Guard where he defended the sand volleyball courts of southern California. After serving in the Air Guard, he was employed at Goodyear before starting his own small engine sales and repair business, until ultimately retiring as a Roads Inspector for the Lancaster County Engineering Department.

He met his wife, Jeanne, when she moved in across the street, beginning what would become a 50+ year life together. After falling in love as neighbors, they married in 1974 and moved to Malcolm, Nebraska before returning to Lincoln and eventually retiring in Olathe, Kansas.

True to his others-before-self nature, Steve enjoyed nothing more than helping family and friends with their projects. A constant remodeler and forever a mechanic, he never met a home, a vehicle, or a yard that he couldn’t make better.

In his retirement, he picked up golf, continued his remodeling, and found his most joy spending hours with his wife fishing off their pontoon boat at Jayhawk Marina. When he wasn’t on the lake, he was a fixture at many of the Olathe school district pools, tracks, ballfields, and gymnasiums to cheer on his grandchildren.

Steve is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jeanne; his children, Shellie (Ed), Scott (Julie), and Bob (Tara); and his three grandchildren, Greyson, Easton, and Avery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his older sister Janice, and his granddaughter Felicia.

A celebration of life open house will be held at the Davey Hall (Davey Community Center) in Davey, Nebraska on Saturday, March 29th, 2025, from 1 to 5pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you remember your favorite Steve story, have a drink, and call your loved ones: though not necessarily in that order.
