Shirley Lee Koenigsfeld of Overland Park, Kansas, formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully at home on Easter Sunday, April 4th surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born in New Hampton, Iowa on August 20, 1936 to John and Nora (Graeser) Connor. She was united in marriage to Edward Koenigsfeld on September 3, 1956 and shared 64 good years together.
Shirley graduated from Nashua High School in 1954. Most of her working career was as a secretary in the athletic department in the Waterloo Public School District. After retiring, she and Ed enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 21 years. She enjoyed her golf and tennis friends but her biggest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandson.
Shirley's love and good listening ear saw many neighbors turned into lifelong friends wherever she lived. She was a natural conversationalist, finding joy in simply connecting with the people close to her. This joy is contagious and the amount of close people Shirley held throughout her life is testament to her kind nature.
Visitation will be on Thursday, April 8, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Penwell–Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, KS. Services will be Friday at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church in Overland Park, KS with the rosary beginning at 9:30 a.m. followed by the funeral at 10:00 a.m. which will also be live streamed.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Ed; three daughters, Kelly Koenigsfeld of Olathe, KS, Janene Munkirs of Overland Park, KS, and Deanne (Joe) Zeets of Olathe, KS; and four grandchildren, Matthew Zeets, Danielle (Tony) Thorup, Michael (McKinzey Manes) Zeets, and Connor Koenigsfeld; one great grandchild, Vinny Thorup; sister, Marva Eck, and sister-in-law, Kay Connor, and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Lenos Connor, and brother-in-law, Eddie Eck.
Shirley's family will miss her dearly. She has left behind many family traditions and a culture of love, laughter, and listening. She will be remembered through the love that her family will forever share.
Memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society or Olathe Health Charitable Foundation/Cancer Center.
