Shirley Kathleen Hoffman

September 4, 1935 — August 14, 2018

Shirley K. Hoffman, loving mom, sister, aunt, and Grammie passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, August
14, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband Paul in July 2015, and her parents, Hoover and
Lola (Powles) McKenzie. She is survived by her two daughters, Terri and Anne, son-in-law, Jamie, her
three grandchildren, Drew, Mady & Brady, who were her pride and joy, her brother and sister-in-law,
Rich and Carolyn McKenzie, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Like her husband, Shirley never met a stranger, so she is also survived by many friends, neighbors, her
daughter's and grandchildren's friends and teaching friends.

Shirley was born in Alliance Nebraska on September 4, 1935. Her family moved to Hastings, Nebraska in
1940 and she graduated from Hastings High School in 1953. She attended and graduated from Hastings
College in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Paul and Shirley were married July 16, 1960 and
celebrated 55 years of marriage before Paul passed away.

Shirley began her education career as a third grade teacher at Western Hills Elementary School in
Omaha, Nebraska. In 1967, Paul and Shirley relocated to Overland Park, Kansas and she continued her
education career working as a preschool teacher for Faith Lutheran Church Preschool. After teaching for
several years, she decided to move to an administrative assistant role starting at Mill Creek Elementary
and then moving to Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. She retired from the Shawnee Mission
School District in 1998. Shirley had a passion for working with young children and shortly after retiring,
she began volunteering in the Olathe School District. She volunteered at Pleasant Ridge Elementary
school and Briarwood Elementary School in the kindergarten classroom – between the two schools she
volunteered for 20 years. She loved spending time with the children and her teacher friends, and spent
her last afternoon helping the kindergarten teacher at their "Meet The Teacher" event. She will be
honored with a Presidential Service award for her volunteer service at the September Olathe Board of
Education meeting. She was very proud of this accomplishment and her daughters will accept the
award on her behalf.

She was a loving "Grammie" to her three grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with
them, especially watching them play sports. She was always in the stands cheering them on and
keeping their stats at each game, while she watched them play football, basketball, soccer and baseball.
In addition to her many years of working with children, Shirley also enjoyed reading, watching the
Hallmark Channel, cooking and baking for family, participating in online worship at United Methodist
Church of the Resurrection each week, volunteering at the church and taking care of her flower gardens
which always had beautiful blooming flowers. Like Paul, she was proud of her Nebraska heritage and
enjoyed cheering on the Huskers.

To honor her love of teaching and many years as a kindergarten volunteer, a memorial fund has been
established to purchase classroom supplies for elementary schools sponsored by United Methodist
Church of the Resurrection and Briarwood Elementary where she volunteered the last several years. In
lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to this fund in Shirley's memory. If you wish
to contribute, checks may be sent to Anne Fancher at 9304 W. 156th Place, Overland Park, KS 66221,.
Checks can be made payable to Terri Hoffman or Anne Fancher who will coordinate the distribution of
the dollars to the respective schools.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held September 8th at 2:00 p.m. in the Wesley Chapel at United
Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Leawood, Kansas. The family will receive
friends following the service. To celebrate her love for blooming flowers, please wear something
colorful.
