A memorial mass for Shirley Bernauer, age 78 of Olathe, will be held on Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 am at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 900 Honeysuckle, Olathe, KS, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Shirley passed away on Friday, Aug 17, 2012 at Olathe Medical Center. She is survived by her husband, Bill Bernauer, her children Cindy Bernauer and husband John Tush, Jeff Bernauer and his wife, Marsha, and Mike Bernauer and his wife Denise, five grandchildren and one great-grandchildren, and sister Rita Wise. Preceding her in death are her parents Gilbert and Lenora Lynch and her son Greg Bernauer.

Shirley was born July 16, 1934 in Kansas City , KS and graduated from Wyandotte High School . She married in 1955 while working for National Life and Accident in Kansas City where she met her husband, Bill. She was a stay at home mother until her last child entered grade school after which she worked in local schools: Linden West in Gladstone , MO as a play ground assistant, St. Charles Borromeo in Gladstone , MO as a teacher's aide, North Central High School in Indianapolis , IN as a library assistant. She worked in administrative roles at ADP in Indianapolis , IN and for the City of Olathe in the Parks and Recreation Department. She moved with her family as her husband Bill transferred with this employer C.I.T from Kansas City , MO to Baltimore , MD to Kansas City , MO to Indianapolis , IN and back to the Kansas City area ( Olathe ).

Shirley enjoyed reading, travel, dining out, cooking for family gatherings, and family vacations. Her recent favorite pleasures were playing cards at the local YMCA and serving as the RED Hat's queen for the Yellow Brick Road group in Olathe . She liked people, had a ready smile and usually a good quip to go with it.

In later years, the Outer Banks had become a favorite vacation spot. This year she was determined to go there, saying it was her last visit. Chemo was hard on her and exhausting. She never complained and bore her ailments with dignity.
