Scott Alan Innes

January 2, 1967 — June 4, 2024

Scott Alan Innes, 57, of Overland Park, KS, died peaceably on June 4, 2024, after a long and heroic battle with multiple ailments.

Scott, born in Topeka KS, on January 2, 1967, became the son of Richard and Clarice Innes on February 22, 1970. As a boy, the stocky, blond-haired and blue-eyed Scott was described as intelligent, articulate and strong-willed to the point of stubbornness. Indeed, Scott's "I can do it myself" attitude persisted throughout his life.

After graduating from high school with a GED, Scott entered an auto mechanics program in Grandview, MO, but soon thereafter the call of adventure led to a period of travel and exploration that took him from coast to coast, with an extended stay in the Southwest before his eventual return to his parents' farm in Warrensburg, MO.

At the age of 19, Scott joined the United States Navy, completing basic training in San Diego, CA, and then boarding the USS Nimitz for active duty and further training as a firefighter. Scott loved the sea and enjoyed his time in the Navy, especially the port stops in Cairo, Egypt, and Paris, France.

After leaving the Navy at 21, Scott decided to pursue his interest in music, the guitar in particular. He enrolled in a Roberto Vinn guitar-building course in Phoenix, AZ, and, after receiving his certificate, embarked on a musical career based in Lawrence, KS. Soon, however, he realized that he needed another source of income and enrolled in a commercial truck-driving school in Fort Scott, KS, from which he received his CDL. For several years thereafter, Scott was a proud driver for Swift Trucking Company.

Returning to his beloved Southwest, Scott also continued his music career, playing gigs mostly in and around Phoenix. Unfortunately, however, this was also a period of substance abuse for Scott, an addiction that eventually led him back home for treatment in Warrensburg in 2008.

In time, a determined Scott successfully overcame his addiction and returned to commercial driving and independent living. But a car accident in Warrensburg in 2016 left him a paraplegic who spent the last 8 ½ years of his life in residential medical care. Never one to give up or give in, Scott faced the challenges of these final years with courage, hard work and a consistently positive attitude. He regained some strength in his arms and legs and was an expert driver of his motorized chair.

Known throughout the care center as a diehard fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, Scott's room was designated as "Chiefs' Kingdom." Scott was also recognized and appreciated by both staff and residents at the center for his talent as a storyteller, his tales of his earlier life often embellished with added drama and salty language.
While resident at the center, Scott maintained his keen interest in music and expanded his knowledge of music history through the use of adaptives that allowed him to voice control his television and Alexa systems in his room.

Scott is survived by: Mother, Clarice Innes Ewing; Son, Isaiah Scott Innes; Brother, Matthew Innes and his children, Shelby, Colin and Claire and their mother Tricia Innes; Stepbrothers, Craig Ewing, Kent (Mary) Ewing, Bart (Ginny) Ewing; and Stepsister, Cindy (David) Winkleman, as well as many loving Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 136 E. Gay Street, Warrensburg, MO, Saturday, July 16, 2024, at 11a.m.
