Scott E. Buckley, 60, died at his home in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday, September 21, after a long illness. Scott leaves his son, Rhett Carlson Buckley and fiancée, Jennifer Simpson, of Denver; and brother Steve Buckley and his wife, Lori, and their children, Jessica and Jared, all of Omaha. He also leaves many friends, including Mary Fox, Erin Bjornberg, his ex-wife, Melissa Mann, Joe Landis, David Quinly, and numerous neighborhood friends.
Scott was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on Dec. 30, 1953 to Dale Eugene and Phyllis Elna (nee Carlson) Buckley. After his mother died when he was three, he and his younger brother were raised by their grandparents, Frank and Eve Buckley. Scott graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, making him a life-long, diehard Nebraska Cornhuskers fan, and where he was a proud member of the Acacia Fraternity. During his time at Nebraska, he joined the Navy ROTC where he spent a summer after graduation on a naval ship in the Pacific Ocean, looking dapper as always in his uniform.
After his time in the Navy ROTC, Scott worked as a stockbroker at E.F. Hutton and later transitioned to a career in real estate and rehabbing fixer-uppper homes in the Kansas City area. Scott loved good food, both fine dining and not-so-fine-dining, cooking, baking, gardening and had a soft spot and open heart for dogs of all kind, and cats, sometimes. He also was an avid reader, including most recently devouring "The Game of Thrones" with relish.
Scott was extremely proud of his son Rhett, including achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and graduating in 2008 from the University of Kansas with a Bachelors of Science, and in 2012 from Washburn School of Law School with a Juris Doctorate.
Rhett and many of his father's friends will be gathering at 6 o'clock on Saturday, September 27, at Coaches Bar & Grill at 414 W. 103rd Street, Kansas City, Missouri, to celebrate Scott and his life, always one of the good guys. Please come and join in and bring your best Scott Buckley stories and memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family of Scott requests donations be given to the Great Plains SPCA. Please make memorial gifts payable to Great Plains SPCA, indicating "In Memory of Scott Buckley" on your gift. Mail to: Great Plains SPCA, Attn: Development, 5428 Antioch Drive, Merriam, KS 66202.
