Obituary for Sara (Sally) Denise Jones Bowman 1932 - 2021
Sally was born on March 24th, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri to Elizabeth Evelyn and Clare Hartley (C. H.) Jones. She was raised with her sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Jones Taylor, Phyllis Jones Michael and her brother, David Jones. Her home was full of love and stories of Jesus. She learned early in life about a relationship with God and grew up in Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene. Her mother wrote children's books and her father drew illustrations of birds and flowers to go along with the writing. She was often out in nature for walks with the family.
Sally developed a love for all things blooming and birds. She was an expert gardener, whose green thumb is famous in the family. She often sat at her window with binoculars identifying birds in the yard. They loved the seeds she provided in the winter.
Sally met C. Ray Bowman in 1951 and had their first date on July 4th. Their love grew quickly and they were married on Nov. 22, 1951. They looked forward to celebrating their 70th anniversary this year. They welcomed a daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Bowman Peterson in Nov. 1952. After moving to Bethany, Oklahoma they were blessed with two sons, Daniel Riley and David Ray. The family lived in Bethany as the children grew up. Sally was active in their church, Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. She and Ray taught Sunday School and Caravan. She was a member of the Garden Club and Missionary Society. She loved supporting her children's sports and activities. Her gift for hospitality and apple pie was well known with friends and family.
After the children were grown, Sally and Ray moved to Nampa, Idaho and Ray was an architect in Boise. After a few years, they felt God calling them to a new venture of trust. Ray gave up his business and became a consultant for church growth and financial health. Sally traveled the United States with him and assisted him with the work for several years. During this time, they moved to McCall, Idaho.
After retiring from consulting, they spent time in the mountains of Idaho exploring the many beautiful spots and snow skiing. A move to Larkspur, Colorado came later and they continued a love for travel and exploring mountain hide-aways. They spent time with their sons' families in Littleton. They toured the United States and made trips to the Bahamas and sailing in the Virgin Islands.
In 2004, they moved to Olathe, Kansas to be with their daughter, Cindy and son-in-law, Steve. They built an addition to Cindy and Steve's house. For the next 18 years, Sally loved having family visits, celebrating special occasions with big parties, leading Bible study at College Church of the Nazarene, fishing in the neighborhood lake, and playing with anyone who didn't mind getting beat at games. An important part of her Olathe life was participating in the Prayer Shawl Ministry and knitting shawls for people in need.
Sally was a vibrant, loving, mischievous woman who didn't want to miss out on any opportunity to live life to the fullest. She leaves her husband, Ray of the home, children Cindy (Steve), Dan (Jy), and David (Cheryl), grandchildren Daniel (Sarah), Andrea (Allen), David (Stasia), Eryn, Riley, Stefan (Laci), Skyler; great- grandchildren Austin (Bre), Tyler, Tanner, Trey, Ryder, Jaxson, Hailey, Kaelyn, Liam, Eli, Aedra, and Kai. Many nieces and nephews. Her second family, the Browns. Her sister Phyllis (Rand) and brother David (Jean) will miss their weekly phone conversations about birds, OU/Chiefs football, and tennis.
Sally lost a battle with Covid-19 on September 20, 2021 and joined her parents, sister Betty Taylor, and many friends in Heaven. We will miss the "heart of our family". She cannot be replaced; but our trust is in the Lord she loved and served faithfully her whole life.
