Ruth Elizabeth Smutz, 94, of Olathe, KS passed away on June 18, 2019. She was born on December 16, 1924 to Harry and Harriet (James) Day in Springfield, IL.
Ruth grew up in Centralia and Carbondale, IL. She completed a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Illinois. Several years later she married the man who would be her lifelong partner, Wayne Smutz. The two of them moved to Albuquerque, NM where they had four children, Pam, Barb, Ron, and Steve. When the children were still young, they returned to the Midwest and established their home in Overland Park, KS where they remained for 53 years, until health concerns required downsizing and a move to a retirement center in Olathe. Ruth had continued to live there for another four years after Wayne's death.
Ruth was a devoted mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. As her children were growing up, she took loving care of the family and home, and assisted in the children's Girl Scout, Cub Scout and classroom activities, and served as Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. Above all, she was always there for them, supporting and assisting in all the family activities, and working with Wayne to plan multiple family vacations and reunions. She and Wayne actively followed the Kansas City Royals, often taking family members to games. Ruth will always be remembered for her love, support, and prioritization of family.
Ruth is survived by her loving children: Pamela Stover-Dixon (Richard Dixon), Stephen Smutz, Ronald Smutz, and Barbara McGill (Walter); grandchildren Rebecca McCallister, Jeffrey Stover, Carl Isenburg, Donny Smutz, Ronald Smutz, Jr., Justin Smutz, Sarah Williams, and Aaron Smutz; and 15 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Mary Simmons (Morgan), and brother-in-law Dale Smutz (Joyce Ann).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Harriet Day; husband, Wayne Smutz; brother, Warren (Bud) Day; son-in-law, Kenneth Stover; and daughter-in-law Janice Smutz.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2019, at Penwell-Gabel's Olathe Chapel.
