Ruth Moon

January 7, 1953 — April 18, 2015

Ruth Wichman Moon, January 1953 to April 2015, resident of Desoto, Kansas. Despite being a small and humble person, Ruth had the heart of a lion and the spirit and faith of a warrior in her four year battle with cancer.

Ruth was one of six children born to the late Henry and Ethel Wichman, and was the beloved wife of John M. Moon for over 33 years. Ruth will be forever remembered by her dearly loved children, Sarah and Ben Moon, and her devoted sisters Elaine Rottinghaus, Lois Fladie, and brother Lynn Wichman. Ruth was preceded in death by her brothers Garry Wichman and Eugene Wichman. Ruth had many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and teachers whom she loved and were blessed to have known her.

Ruth was born and raised on the family farm in Seneca, Kansas. She graduated from B&B High School and completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Emporia State University in Special Education. During her career in special education, Ruth taught children in Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Kansas from birth through high school and taught prospective teachers at the University level. Since 2000, Ruth taught Special Education at Edwardsville Elementary and Clark Middle School in Bonner Springs, KS.

Ruth devoted her professional life to teaching children with special needs. She also served as a coach in bowling, basketball and track for Special Olympics. Ruth was a mentor teacher for new teachers and was awarded the 2007 Local District Teacher of the Year for USD 204. Ruth was devoted to her family and loved being a mother to Sarah and Ben; they were her most precious gifts. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and visiting with family and friends. Ruth and John, in addition to being husband and wife, were best friends.

Ruth touched the lives of many people with her smile, faith in God, and sense of humor. She was known for her devotion to creativity, organization, and her loving, humble and kind nature.
