Russell A. Yocum, 92, of Olathe, KS, passed away Christmas morning, December 25, 2010 at Olathe Medical Center. Russell was born in Lenexa, KS to Walter A. and Amanda M. Yocum. Russell served in the Army during World War II and was stationed at Fort Benning Georgia and served at the Sunflower Ammunition Plant in De Soto, KS.
Russell married Jessie House in 1941. After the war, Russell worked construction before becoming a rural mail carrier serving the Lenexa and Stanley area retiring from the post office in 1982. Russell was a life long member of The Lenexa Masonic Lodge 135, The Order of the Eastern Star 467 and The Earl Collier American Legion Post 153. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Alice Grigsby, grandson Daniel Yocum and granddaughter Emily Yocum.
Russell is survived by his wife, Jessie of 69 years, daughters Nancy Yocum, Dianna McElroy, Mary Sweetser and son Charles Yocum and wife Bemby, sister Mary Lou Hodges and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a great great grandchild.
A time of visitation and viewing will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 Black Bob Rd., Olathe, KS on Tuesday, December 28th at 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Masonic Rites being given at 6:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 29th at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to The Earl Collier American Legion Post 153, the Hoeger House or the Olathe Medical Foundation c/o Hospice House.
