Roy Victor Ekberg, 92, of Ottawa, passed away on August 29, 2016 at Olathe Hospice House.
He was born on March 8, 1924, to Victor and Mildred Ekberg in Omaha, NE.
On November 18, 1950, he married Luella Sinner.
Roy obtained degrees in mechanical engineering and also had an MBA. He was employed by AT&T for many years, during which the family resided in Overland Park. After retirement and prior to moving to Ottawa, Roy and Luella resided at Pomme de Terre Lake in MO and in Brownsville, TX.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of sixty-five years, Luella, daughter, Cheryl Gerhardt, of Overland Park, and granddaughter, Kimberly Gerhardt, of Rapid City, SD.
Roy was artistic, an accomplished pianist and composer of "My Inspiration", written around 1948. He also enjoyed astronomy and even built his own telescope. Roy participated as an Amateur (ham) Radio operator using call letters W0LIQ. Fishing was another activity he enjoyed, both at Pomme de Terre and during family vacations in Minnesota. Roy also enjoyed inventing things and was pleased when in 2002 he was granted a patent for an item he developed described as a magnetic board game for instructional use.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 4:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Olathe Chapel, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service time.
Memorials are suggested to the Olathe Hospice House.
