Rose Mary Mong, age 89, passed away February 10, 2012, at Olathe Medical Center.
She was born July 7, 1922, in Parsons, Kansas, to the late Maurice Ayers and Mary (Stevens) Ayers.
Rose Mary earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Labette County Community College in 1941 and taught school in a one-room schoolhouse. Later, she worked for Senator Bob Dole, the Independence Daily Reporter, and on the Avery for Governor Advisory Committee. She was, an award-winning poet, and in 1986 she published a book of poetry entitled Barefoot Forever. She served as President of the Kansas Arts Commission in 1994.
She married Walter Lewis McVey, Jr. in 1944 and they had two sons, David McVey and the late "Mickey" McVey.
She is preceded in death by her son "Mickey," her husband C.R. Mong, and her brother Maurice Ayers Jr. She is survived by her son David and his wife Norma of Olathe, KS, her sister Lorla Miller of Tempe, AZ, four step-children, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Rose Mary Mong will be at 1 pm, Thursday, February 16, 2012, at Church of the Epiphany, 400 East Maple Street, Independence, Kansas.
