Ronald Erwin Thies of Olathe, Kansas passed away Friday, November 11, 2022, at Brookdale Care Center Overland Park, Kansas. He was born December 31, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to Erwin William and Dorothea (Stilwell) Thies.
Ron grew up in Kansas City. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1959. He then received his bachelors degree from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri in 1964 and Masters degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1968.
Ron worked as camp director for the YMCA Camp Santosage in Independence, Missouri in the early 1970's and then spent 5 years as Financial Aid Officer at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona. The family returned to Kansas City from Arizona, he took a sales position at Jones Store (later Macy's) where he enjoyed nearly 30 years in the carpet and furniture department.
He and family enjoyed tailgating for Chiefs football games at Arrowhead Stadium for over 25 years. Although he was not a Kansas University graduate, he thoroughly enjoyed attending Kansas Jayhawk basketball games for decades. His other passion was for red cars of which he owned three, those three "retirement" vehicles included a red Pontiac Solstice convertible.
Ron is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carol Thies, of Olathe, Kansas and his sister, Betty Graham, of Overland Park, Kansas. Also are his two sons, Robert Thies (Kathleen Wickersham) of Webster Groves, Missouri and Paul Thies; daughter in law, Stacie Thies of DeSoto, Kansas; grandchildren, Ryan (Jesslyn), Adam (Brooke), Luca and Mira Thies; great grandchildren, Rhett, Wren, and Robin Thies.
