Robert J. (Bob) Stewart, 81, of Olathe, Kan. died peacefully Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Good Samaritan Center.
Bob was born July 23, 1932, in Independence, Mo., the son of Clarence J. and Martha J. Stewart.
He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1952. Bob spent most of his four years of service on Minesweepers, including the U.S.S. Siskin and U.S.S. Quail. Those ships took him to ports around the world, including France, Italy, Greece, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
After returning home, Robert worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, where he was employed for a total of 33 years, including 11 as a private contractor. His many roles included controller, trainer and En Route Automation Supervisor.
On April 28, 1967, Bob married Kathleen Cully. They spent 11 happy years together, before Kathleen passed away on February 1, 1978.
Bob later met Lois Stewart, a fellow FAA employee. Robert and Lois married on October 12, 1979. Over the next 33 years, Bob was heavily involved in the lives of Lois's children and their growing families. The couple enjoyed traveling together and attending New Hope Presbyterian Church of America.
In his later years, Bob enjoyed walking and gardening.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Kathleen; and his daughter, Melanie Hays.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Good Samaritan Center; a son, Bob Montgomery, of Olathe, Kan. Melinda Montgomery of Lenexa, Kan; cousins Susan Julian Davis, of Sugar Creek Mo., Nancy Lea Julian Kann, of Coto de Caza, Calif., Mary Jane Julian Horner, of Springfield, Mo., Martha Lea Smith, of Monarch Bay, Calif., and Muriel Petri, of Arcadia, Calif.; childhood friend James Adkins; grandchildren Robert and wife Tricia, Sara and husband Sydney, Ashley and Neal; and great-grandchildren Jordan, Jacob, Shania, Joshua and Emerson.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, January 13 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1 p.m.
