Robert Frank Sobczak, 69, of Overland Park, passed away on March 18, 2024 at his home. He was born on January 20, 1955 to Robert and Dorothy (Kostrzeski) Sobczak in Chicago, IL.
While leading a very eventful life, it was never easy. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 18, Bob spent the following 51 years battling this disease. Always a fighter, he remained positive and determined to make a difference. His family & friends are so proud of all that he was able to overcome and thankful for his persistence.
Bob worked as a Quality Engineer for Plastic Packaging Technologies, until the time of his death. He left a mark on his colleagues and his workplace. He loved everything about his job and every person that he worked with. His unwavering commitment to his work was evident in the way he prioritized his colleagues, led by example and took pride in solving problems for his co-workers and clients alike. Bob's legacy lives on through the lessons that he imparted, reminding us all of the importance of teamwork, dedication, as well as continuous reflection & self-education coupled with the spirit of persistence and never giving up.
Bob was an expert handyman, adept at fixing anything and everything in need of repair. An engineer at heart, he enjoyed creating things with his bare hands and improved absolutely everything that he could lay his hands on. There was no problem that he couldn't solve. He loved the challenge of finding simple solutions to complex issues, especially when he was solving them for those that he cared about so much. Bob's number one priority was always his family. His most valued times were spent sharing his knowledge and experience with his grandchildren. He made sure to teach all of the important things; including riding bikes, flying kites, swimming, conducting science experiments & exploring nature while looking for the perfect rock for his collection. His favorite past time was attending the New Theater Restaurant where he was a front row season ticket holder for 32 years.
Bob was also an avid Kansas City sports fan, never missing a Royals or Chiefs game. He was committed to communication, love and acceptance. He never hesitated to drop everything and help a friend in need at a moment's notice. He was known for asking so little and giving so much. Bob's philosophy was seek to understand, not to be understood. This was so clearly manifested in his work and approach to problem solving and can be seen carried on by those who loved him and those who were influenced by his values and indomitable ethics. He truly sought to educate and help improve the lives of all who would learn. He maintained his fierce independence and love for his family until his last days. He was irreplaceable and will be forever missed. His legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren as well as the many who his life has touched.
Bob is survived by his daughters, Julie (Darcy) Draves, and Cheryl (Eric) Gharst, as well as 7 grandchildren.
He will forever be….Dad, Grandpa, and Mr.Bob. In honor of Bob, please consider making a donation to the American Diabetes Association
