Robert James Mehan III, was born February 17, 1950 in Kansas City, MO and died in Olathe, KS on November 4, 2018.
Bob, a Kansas City native, attended Curé of Ars Church and Bishop Miege High School, class of 1969. He entered the Navy in 1970 and served on the USS Intrepid, now a museum in Manhattan, New York's harbor at Pier 86. Bob was Honorably discharged from the Navy after racing down a hallway and colliding with a bulkhead, the only time his 6'4" stature got the best of him. After his discharge, Bob worked as a night supervisor at Coors, a forklift operator at Silo, and at the United States Post Office as a Tractor Trailer Operator.
Bob retired December 31, 2017 from his position at the Post Office and was enjoying retirement. He puppysat his granddog, Bert, brunched with his mother-in-law or found projects to tinker on from time to time. Bob was keen about the needs of others in a dignified and peaceful way. He'd joyfully volunteer, "I'll do it, let me." He acted on the compassion in his heart and gave everything he could in everything he did.
Bob always smiled, and he never knew a stranger. He loved everyone, two or four legged. He volunteered at the Petsmart dog adoption days. He would help present pups at their best and often joked with his wife, "we can't take them all!"
A true sports fan he rooted for whatever team was on. Although from KC, Bob cheered unabashedly for the New England Patriots football team. In his spare time Bob collected and built model airplanes and trucks, attended classic car shows, watched old Jerry Lewis films, and gleefully listened to Benny Goodman the "King of Swing."
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Michelle. The pair shared an infectious adoration of each other, often jovial and fun to be around; three children Kristen McClain, who enjoyed watching Annie and dining with her father, Jason Miller, who shared his love of Mustangs and attended auto shows, and Katie Mehan, who adorns his quiet and gentle qualities. Four grandchildren Margot McClain, Vance McClain, Edmund McClain, and Georgia McClain, and three sisters Cheryl James, Karen Thomas, and Gwenn Venable.
He is preceded in death by Irvin M. and Gloria J. Lefton Halloran, and Robert James Mehan II.
His family will receive guests for a visitation from 1:00-2:00pm on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, with a memorial service following at 2:00pm.
Memorial contributions may be given to either The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City or to the Unleashed Pet Rescue of Mission, KS.
