Robert Carmon Cook

May 7, 1973 — February 15, 2025

Gardner

Robert Cook, 51, passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 15, 2025, in Gardner, Kansas. Born on May 7, 1973, in Overland Park, Kansas, Robert lived a life filled with humor, imagination, and an adventurous spirit that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A proud graduate of Shawnee Mission North, Robert never missed an opportunity to announce "there's my alma mater" whenever he drove by the school. His love for learning extended beyond the classroom into a lifelong passion for reading and music. An accomplished musician, he played multiple instruments, including the drums, bass guitar, trombone, and banjo. His musical talents were shared with the congregation at Knox Presbyterian Church, where he was a dedicated member of both the church choir and handbell choir—specializing in playing "the biggest handbells." While real instruments were fun, his air-guitar, air-drumming, and car karaoke were where his light shined the brightest.

As a lifelong Special Olympian, Robert played softball, ran track, and was a “pin demolisher” in bowling, but his greatest success came in powerlifting. He proudly took 6th place in the world at the 1995 World Special Olympic Games in New Haven, Connecticut.

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of Robert’s life was his role as a tiger trainer. Over the years, he cared for more than 40 tigers—forming deep bonds with these majestic stuffed animals. One “800 pound” tiger in particular, Starey, remained under Robert’s care for an astonishing 47 years.

Robert also had a deep appreciation for the little things in life. Whether it was his devotion to Jimmy John's "all cheese" sandwiches every Tuesday, cheering on NASCAR driver Kyle Petty (#44), enjoying a good "cup of joe," or celebrating each successful sighting of a Knight Semi-truck by exclaiming "got another one!"—he found joy in life’s simple pleasures.

Robert is survived by Max Cook (Rayane), as well as his beloved nephew Elliott Cook and niece Lila Cook. He was predeceased by his parents, Delmer and Jane Cook.

A memorial service will be held on Monday February 24, 2025, at Knox Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kansas (9595 W 95th Street) at 4 PM.

Robert’s legacy is one of laughter, creativity, and boundless curiosity. His memory will continue to bring smiles to those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make donations to Knox Presbyterian Church in Robert’s honor.
