Robert Desmond Black

October 19, 1926 — March 9, 2024

Robert (Bob) Desmond Black, 97, formerly of Glen Ellyn, IL passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024 while residing in Overland Park, KS with family. He was born on October 19, 1926 to Robert (Scottie) and Mary Kerr Johnstone Black of Mansfield, OH, who immigrated from Scotland.

Bob proudly earned his Eagle Scout Rank. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High in 1944 and quickly joined the Merchant Marines as a commissioned officer. Bob graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1948 with a degree in engineering and served on multiple Moore-McCormack Ships in the aftermath of WII.

On July 11, 1953, he married Eileen Ericson of Cleveland, Ohio. Bob started his married life as a Salesman for Iron Fireman in Rochester, New York. He was recruited to American Standard and after several promotions and moves joined Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation which later merged into United Technologies. He retired in 1987 as Vice President of Marketing with United Technologies and made his final move from Dallas to Glen Ellyn Illinois, where they lived blissfully until Eileen's passing on November 25, 2018, she was 90 years old.

Bob enjoyed traveling with Eileen all over the world but had an affinity for Sanibel, Florida where they traveled yearly as Snowbirds. He was an avid athlete and excelled in track, tennis, skiing and golf. He was especially proud of his contribution and service to the Ed Posh Scholarship Foundation at the Village Links Golf Club of Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Bob was a long-standing member of First Presbyterian Church of Glen Ellyn. Serving as both a Deacon and an Elder. He was deeply committed to his family, revered in the community, a wonderful story teller, a loyal patriot to his country and one of the last of the "Greatest Generation."

Bob was preceded in death by his adoring wife Eileen of 65 years and survived by his loving children; Cynthia M Black of Overland Park, KS; Laureen M Hartman (Dan) of Naperville, IL and Robert D Black, Jr. (Jodi) of Frisco, TX., and three Granddaughters, Lyndsay, Keri and Caitlyn.

The memories get to live forever Pop. You taught us well and it was an honor.
