Robert A. Babcock, 82, of Mission Hills, KS, died Wednesday, August 10th at St. Luke's Hospice in Kansas City. Services will be private. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke's Hospice or Wayside Waifs of Kansas City.
A native of Michigan, Bob received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Kansas in 1957 where he met his wife, Donna. Bob went on to receive his J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1959. Following law school, Bob served in the Air Force as a Judge Advocate where he attained the rank of Captain. He was a member of the Missouri and Michigan Bars, and admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States. He practiced law for over 50 years, spending his last 25 years at Baker Sterchi Cowden & Rice where he focused on construction and fidelity/surety matters. At the time of his death, he was still managing an active caseload.
Bob was a past president of several defense organizations, including the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) (1988-1989), The Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers (1988-1989), and WESTMO Defense Lawyers Association(1975-1976). He was also a past FDCC Board Chairman and served as Chairman on several committees, including the American Bar Association's Fidelity & Law Committee, Section on Torts; the FDCC's Fidelity, Surety and Public Contract Law Section Committee; and Defense Research Institute's Fidelity and Surety, and Professional Liability Committees.
In addition, Bob was active in many civic organizations. He served on the Board of Ozanam Home including two terms as President. He was a member of the Society of Fellows at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Bob was a member of the Garden of the Gods Club in Colorado Springs, CO, the Carriage Club and the Kansas City Club where he also served as President.
Bob was an avid fisherman, a hobby which he pursued across the globe. He was a faithful supporter of Michigan football and KU basketball.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna, his daughter Laura Sutherland of Lawrence, KS, his son Brooks of Chapel Hill, NC and six grandchildren.
