Rick Marshall, 56, of Paola, passed away April 4, 2014. Survivors include his wife Lisa, his mother and step-father Marilyn and Jack, his step-mother Marsha, his sister Vicki, nephews Josh and Tyler, and his aunt Norma. His father, Ted, preceded him in death.
Born Feb. 13, 1958 in Indianapolis, Rick was an Eagle Scout and a volunteer EMT with a fire/rescue service before graduating from Ben Davis High School. He came to Kansas to attend KU's EMICT program and became a paramedic for Johnson County MedAct. After completing the nursing program at JCCC, Rick was an ER nurse for the rest of his career.
Rick was a talented musician, and he loved performing with his band Bluestem. The Walnut Valley Music Festival was like a second home to him, and every year he looked forward to sharing music and laughter with his Winfield friends. Rick was an enthusiastic gardener, a lively traveler, and an avid Indy 500 fan. At the age of 50, he unexpectedly learned to ride and he spent countless happy hours in his last years playing with horses.
A memorial service for Rick will be Sat., June 7 at 11 AM in the Hillsdale Presbyterian Church, Hillsdale, KS. A jam will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or to New Horizon Ranch, Rantoul, KS, a therapeutic riding center.
Rick is greatly missed by his family, friends, cats, and his beloved mare Jezzie.
