Richard (Dick) Stevens, of Olathe, passed away at home in October 7, 2012 after a lengthy illness. He was born to Henry and Abbie Stevens in Bagley, Iowa. After graduating from Bayard High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he attended Drake University in Des Moines, and also Boston University. He earned his Masters Degree at Drake.
He taught school for many years in Iowa and Nebraska. While teaching in Nebraska, he met his wife, Jean. They married in May of 1977, and were married for 35 years.
After his teaching career, he went into sales, but his heart was in art, so upon retiring, he became a ful-time artist and a very talented one. He had his art work all over the United States.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law, Luther Johnson. Surviving are his loving wife, Jean, son Douglas (Chris) Stevens of Las Vegas, NV, daughters Susan Stevens of Waterloo, IA and Sharon Stevens of Iowa City, IA, step-sons John and Scott Rucksdaescher, both of Olathe, KS, sisters Alice Johnson of Cresco, IA and Millie Bucklin of Jefferson, IA, three grandsons, the mother of his children, Pat Stevens of Santa Fe, New Mexico and many nieces and nephews and friends.
We couldn't have asked for a better husband or father. He was one of a kind and really knew how to enjoy life. He will be greatly missed.
We would like to extend our thanks to the staff at Olathe Medical Center for their great care and compassion. We would also like to thank Olathe Medical Center Hospice for their care and comforting words while Dick was at home.
Dick's request was that he be cremated. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
