Richard "Dick" Sandberg passed away on January 16, 2020 at Olathe Hospice House at the age of 84. Richard was born in Independence, Kansas his parents were Eric and Lula Sandberg. He graduated from Olathe High School in 1953, where he was active in track and field. Richard enjoyed motorcycles, fast cars, and was a Buick enthusiast second to none. He and his loving wife of 46 years, Barbara, restarted the Kansas City Mid-America Chapter of the Buick Club of America. Richard restored and showed many antique cars over the years. His favorite, was a 1952 Buick named "Ruby J." Richard was well known in the community and was president of Olathe's Old Settler's Day celebration in 1992. He retired in 1992 from Delco Battery after his career of 37 years. Richard and Barbara moved to Paola, Kansas in 2005.
Predeceased by his parents Eric and Lula Sandberg, brother Robert Sandberg and step-son Brannon Gilliland. Richard is survived by his devoted wife Barbara "Walters" Sandberg. His first wife and mother of his three sons, Jeryn "Selves" Igert. He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Richard L. Sandberg (Marilyn), Jerry Sandberg (Sharon), David Sandberg (MaryJo), and step-daughters Nancy "Gilliland" McConnell (David) and Linda "Gilliland" Hudson (Shawn), 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel at 1PM, Tuesday January 21, 2020; 14275 S Black Bob Rd, Olathe, KS 66061. Funeral services to follow at this location. Internment will be at Oak Lawn Memorial of Olathe. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Olathe Hospice House 15310 S Marion St. Olathe KS 66061.
