Richard Lee Holdman

July 27, 1946 — January 11, 2022

Richard "Dick" Lee Holdman, 75, of Olathe, passed away on January 11, 2022 at Olathe Hospice House with his wife at his bedside.

He was born on July 27, 1946 to Melvin and Hilda (Dalton) Holdman in Bonne Terre, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Wanda and Hobart Vaughn; his sister-in-law, Janet Vaughn Mills and his best friend, James Morris.

Dick grew up in Esther, Missouri. He proudly served in the U.S. Army where he was an air traffic controller from 1965 - 1968. On June 27, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, Vicki Lynn Vaughn. When Dick left the military in 1968, he was hired by the FAA where he worked as an air traffic controller, a supervisor and internal consultant to the union/management partnership process at the Central Region Air Traffic Center in Olathe, Kansas. Dick enjoyed a career in air traffic for over 30 years. Following his retirement from the FAA, he started his own company, Team Dynamics, where he worked with groups, businesses, and organizations teaching facilitation practices, strategic problem solving and leadership skills. Dick also worked for the Olathe School District as Manager of Facility Usage.

Dick loved life. At the top of his love list were his wife, kids and grandchildren. He loved the Chiefs and enjoyed playing in the same fantasy football league as many friends and family members. He loved watching college basketball with Vicki, especially KU and March Madness. A favorite pastime was playing bridge and he took pride in sometimes bidding by "his own" rules. He was passionate about fly fishing and Bennett Springs was one of his happy places. He enjoyed golf and in retirement liked volunteering as a marshall at the Heritage Golf Course.

Dick was deeply invested in his church and his community.

Dick's faith was very important to him. While his kids were growing up, he and Vicki were actively involved at First Presbyterian Church of Olathe. Many memories and life-long friendships were made at this church. At First Pres. Dick served on Session, volunteered in youth ministry, served alongside Vicki, who was on staff as Children's Director, and served in many other areas of the church.

Over the past 20 years he volunteered in many areas at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection at both the Leawood and Olathe locations. He served on the Board of Trustees, the Leadership Institute Team, Men's Ministry Team, worked in Mission Ministries, and was the best assistant Vicki ever had as he worked alongside her in every way in her staff position in KiDSCOR ministry.

Dick served his community in many areas. He was a member of the first Kansas Community Leadership Initiative; Leadership Olathe; chairperson of the Mahaffie Stagecoach Farmstead Foundation; charter member and president of the Clockwinder's Optimist Club; founding member and co-chair of the Olathe Mayor's Prayer Breakfast; Executive Committee of Olathe Old Settler's Association; past member of City of Olathe Parks and Rec Board; member of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce; co-chair of the Finance Committee for the Olathe Sesquicentennial Committee, and member of the Olathe Historical Society.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 54 years,Vicki, and their children Chris Holdman and wife, Kara; Patrick Holdman and wife, Rhonda; and Lynnlea Nelson and husband, Steve. He also leaves ten grandchildren- Kenna, Kainsley, Kasslynn and Kallina Holdman; Lexi and Lani Holdman, Kylee Broekemeier and Brecken, Raelynn, and Harper Nelson. Dick was an only child and Vicki's siblings were always like his own brothers and sisters. Surviving him are Sherry Smith of Park Hills, Missouri; Hobie (Kathy) Vaughn of Salina, Kansas and Carlos (Beth) Vaughn of Kansas City, Missouri, and many nephews and nieces. His "Bridge Group" friends were close like family, Bob and Lila Courtney, Bruce and Pat Koenig, and Sharman Morris, and their families.
