Rachel G. Verhaeghe

Rachel G. Verhaeghe died peacefully at Villa St. Francis, Olathe, KS on September 17th, at age 94.

Rachel was born August 22, 1922 to Achiel and Eugenia Werbrouck in Kansas City, Kansas and spent most of her early years on their farm near 127th and Nall in Johnson County. In July 1947, she married Kamiel Verhaeghe and moved to the farm at 170th street and Quivira where she spent the next nearly 70 years.

Since life on the farm and raising her six active children were Rachel's greatest joy, she seldom ventured far from home. Her big weekly adventure for nearly thirty years was her beloved egg route, primarily in the Olathe area. Along the route, Rachel delivered eggs to the many customers that became close and special friends. Seasonally her car was full of coveted garden produce such as the famous Verhaeghe family tomatoes and asparagus.

Rachel was particularly sensitive to people and animals that were in trouble, so a mother robin or a stray dog that needed her help always got her attention. Though her formal education was limited to just eight grades in the local one-room schoolhouse, she was a voracious reader and was well informed on world and local events. All her life Rachel kept up a written correspondence , in her beautiful and flawless handwriting, with friends and relatives here and in Canada and Belguim. Her beautiful, charming smile and quick wit will be missed by all who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband , Kamiel, and her second son , Larry, and her sister, Mary Verbeke, of Canada.


She is survived by her brother , Albert Werbrouck, of Turin, Italy, and by five children, Jeannie (Al) Rolf of Olathe, Ks, Gary (Mimi) Verhaeghe of Stilwell, Ks, Conni ( Gary) Owen of Vero Beach, Fl, Patricia ( John) Rice of Olathe, Ks, Michael (Loretta) Verhaeghe of Paola, Ks., ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 27 at 10am at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 16000 W. 143rd, Olathe, KS with prayers of the rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial to begin at 11:30am, also at the church. Interment, St. John Catholic Cemetery, Lenexa, KS.
