Racheal Marceliette Padgett, 95, of Independence, Missouri passed away Monday, October 7, 2013 at Jackson's Village in Independence, Missouri. Marcy, as she was known, was born in rural Earlton, Kansas on September 23, 1918. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday last month.
She was the daughter of Robert Lee and Mittie Florence (Whitington) Huckstep. She graduated from Thayer High School. She was a member of the Blue Ridge Christian Church in Independence, Missouri where she was a member of the singing choir, hand bell choir, Christian Women Fellowship Group and Church Board. She also belonged to the Blue Ridge Roadrunners, a group who met monthly doing different projects and taking trips together, two of which were to Israel. She was a former member of the First Christian Church of Chanute. She was raised on a farm in rural Thayer and Earlton.
During her lifetime, she worked at a potato sorting factory and was an orange picker in California (1945 thru 1949). Coming back to Chanute in 1949 she went to work at the Burlington Overall factory in Chanute. Later she moved to Kansas City where she worked at H.K Porters, The Credit Bureau and at the Federal Building in the Social Security Administrative Department, from which she retired. She was also a mother and house wife. She was married to Myrle Leroy Umbarger on December 25, 1934 in Thayer, Kansas. They divorced in 1957. She later married Gilbert S. Padgett.
She is survived by children John Dale Umbarger (Judy) of Fort Worth, Texas, Roger Kent Umbarger (Phyllis) of Independence, Missouri and Sharon Sue Greve, Chanute, Kansas; eight grandchildren Blynda Sue Hebel, John Dale Umbarger Jr., William "Billy Jo" Joseph Umbarger, John Joseph Squambelluri all of Texas, Cathy Ann Turner of Georgia, Robert Dean Greve of Newton, Kansas, Deidre Sue Trout of Louisville, Kentucky and Roger Kent Umbarger II of Blue Springs, Missouri; twelve great grandchildren Jessica, Marcus, Danielle, John Michael, Casey, Amber, Ryan Dean, Rachel Dawn, Austin, Mckinzie, Joseph, and Ashleigh; and nine great great grandchildren Parker, Cooper, Addyson, Anaston, Ashton, Sebastian, Brayden, Bryson and Kohlton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers John William Huckstep and Robert James Huckstep; three sisters Jonquil Huckstep, Nelda Lea Robertson and Roberta Jean Weidert; one granddaughter Brenda Lee Umbarger; one great grandson Kevin Dale Umbarger; and one son-in-law Larry E. Greve.
