Peter Edmonds Mackey, 41, of Kansas City, Kansas, devoted husband and loving son, passed away at his home on May 8, 2014 of an apparent heart attack. A Celebration of Peter's Life will be held on Friday, May 30 at Visitation Catholic Church located at 51st and Main Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The Service will begin at 4:00 pm and will be followed by a visitation at the church.
Peter was born on June 13, 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Westwood View Elementary School, Indian Hills Junior High School, and Shawnee Mission East High School. He was a loyal Gorilla of Pittsburg State University. Peter spent many happy years at Camp Lincoln in Minnesota as a camper and later a counselor.
After college, Peter worked in the food service industry. As a graduate of the Kauffman Entrepreneurship Training program, he founded The Crave Cafe in Kansas City. He loved the coffee shop, the neighborhood, and all his customers. His nieces loved his chocolate shakes. As an employee of KU Medical Center, Peter proudly served as a steward and Executive Board Member for LiUNA Local Union 1290PE.
In 2012 Peter married the true love of his life, Dawn Mackey. Peter loved barbecue, fly-fishing at Rockbridge, MO, the K.C. Chiefs, and helping to spay/neuter, adopt and care for feral cats. But above all he loved his family. He was a friend to strangers and an advocate for all, except perhaps for an occasional Raiders fan.
Peter is survived by his wife, Dawn Mackey, of the home; his parents, Susan and Bud Mackey of Kansas City; his sister Laura Urquidez, her husband Chris, and four nieces: Merrill, AnnaHelen, Mae, and Daphne, all of Santa Barbara, California; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Peter will be missed by all who knew him, but most of all his family. He leaves a hole in our hearts. Peter was truly our rock.
Memorial contributions may be made to Spay & Neuter Kansas City, (816) 353-0940, http://snkc.net or a charity of your choice.
