Steeped in her Christian faith and with assurance of eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Norma A. Remmert, 84, died August 10, 2021, at Good Samaritan Society in Olathe, Kansas.
She was born on August 8, 1937, in Paola, Kansas, the daughter of late Raymond and Freda (Rentz-Frey) Macklin.
Norma was the second of four siblings and grew up among a large extended family in Paola. She attended First Lutheran Church and school and graduated from Paola High School in 1955. She was baptized on October 17, 1937, and confirmed on March 18, 1951, at First Lutheran in Paola. She married Rolland Remmert on May 17, 1958, and together they raised four children.
Norma worked for the Olathe School District for 27 years. Prior to that, she was Executive Secretary to the President of Smith and Loveless, Lenexa, KS. She was a devoted member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and along with Rolland, they are the longest tenured members of the congregation.
Norma's number one priority was her family. Nothing made her happier than a house full of family. For many years, her and Rolland's house was the go-to place for birthdays and holidays where guests were guaranteed a great meal and lively conversation. She could simultaneously cook, carry on a conversation, and dodge little grandkids running around her feet while looking effortlessly graceful and beautiful in an apron. Even when the oven stopped working one Thanksgiving before the turkey was fully cooked, she never lost her cool.
She always made time to attend her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, band concerts and other special occasions. She kept a very organized list of birthdays for the whole family and never missed sending a card with a handwritten note, just like her mother and sisters. Her kids could count on Norma to make the best costumes in the whole class for school plays and special assignments and drive them all over town to take part in activities. She knew how to pick her battles but wasn't afraid to give in to her kids' wants even if that meant driving through rush hour traffic to meet the lead singer of her son's favorite band or sitting in a parking lot of the local record store with her teenage daughter waiting for a new album to be released at midnight.
Norma was a great mom and an even better grandma. Her grandchildren were her world, and no matter how busy she was, she would drop what she was doing and make a favorite dessert, read a book, or play a game with them. She relished taking care of her family and making each one of them feel special. She made sure everyone was given their share of love.
She is survived by her spouse of 63 years, Rolland Remmert; children, Mark Remmert, Jana Wicks, Michael Remmert (Johana), and Lisa Dubbert (Tom); grandchildren, Ray Remmert, John Remmert, Sam Remmert, Nicholos Collins (Brandy), Michael Collins, Megan Collins, Graham Wicks, Andrew Jiménez-Salgado, Evan Dubbert, and Alec Dubbert; great-grandchildren, Blaise Edington, Shelby Collins, Gauge Jones (Julia), Kiah Collins, Avry Collins, Ireland Collins, Elijah Harn and Ian Harn; as well as her siblings Ernestine Ramsey (Ed), Joan Scott (Doug), and Lee Macklin (Cindy).
A visitation will be held at 9:30 AM at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 920 S. Alta Lane, Olathe, KS, followed by a memorial service at 10:30 AM at the same location. A graveside service will follow at Paola Cemetery, 360 West #356, Paola, KS.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Olathe, Good Shepherd Hospice, Good Samaritan Society, or the charity of their choice. Norma's family wishes to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Society and Good Shepard Hospice for their compassionate care as well as Dr. Rashid Pawah, University of Kansas Medical Center and Dr. Sheba Khalid.
Although her 12 plus year battle with Parkinson's Disease was relentless, Parkinson's never defined her. She remained sweet and gentle. She loved her caregivers and told them so. Norma left a legacy of family first.
