Norbert C. "Chuck" Haas, age 69, of Olathe, Kansas, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at the Olathe Regional Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.
Chuck was born July 13, 1940, at Hays, Kansas, to Alfred and Thecla (Berens) Haas. He served his country with the U. S. Navy for four years. He married Geraldine (Jean) Graff on August 10, 1963, at Welby, Colorado. He worked in food and equipment sales for 40 years, had worked at Walmart. He was very active in the Volga German Society since 1992 and served as President of the Kansas City Chapter. He was a member of the St Paul's Catholic Church, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop DeSchenes Assembly, the Sierra International Club since 1998, Sunflower Polka Club, Denver Kickers Polka Club.
Survivors include his wife, Jean, of the home in Olathe; a son, Michael Haas of Olathe; daughters, Brenda Otting and her husband, Craig of Hutchison, Ks., and Dr. Karen Haas-Chapman and her husband, Dr. Tom Chapman of Olathe, Kansas; his mother, Thecla of Hays; brothers, Nathan, Omaha, Nebraska, Fr. Julian L. Haas OFM Cap. of Denver, Colorado, Tom, Hays, Kansas, Richard, Millersville, Maryland, Maurice, LaCrosse, Kansas, John, Hays, Kansas and Fredd Haas, Des Moines, Iowa; sisters, Alfreda Schmidt of Hays, Lorraine Berland, Montgomery, Texas, Judy Matranga and Donna Nathanson both of San Francisco, Calif. and Joyce Lang of Hays; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Mary, his Dad and an infant sister, Mary.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 16 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays. Burial will be in the Our Lady, Help of Christians Cemetery in Antonino, Kansas. On Friday there will be a Daughters of Isabella rosary at 5:30 p.m., a parish vigil service at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus rosary at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights will stand honor guard from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 5 until 8 p.m. and on Saturday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home from 10-11:30 a.m. Friends may also call from 6-8 pm Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Olathe, Kansas. Rosary at 7 pm. Memorials have been established as a Chuck Haas grandchildren's education fund or the Capuchin Province of Mid America, in care of the funeral home.
