Nita June Brown

April 17, 1936 — October 7, 2024

Overland Park

Nita June Brown, age 88, of Prairie Village, Kansas, passed away peacefully Monday October 7, 2024 at Colonial Village in Overland Park, Kansas.

Nita was born April 17, 1936 in Hardin County, Tennessee to Melrose and Roberta (Duke) McCasland. She began her schooling at an early age in the nearby one room school house. Her early start and her keen mind allowed her to graduate from Central High School in Savannah, Tennessee in 1952 at the age of sixteen. After graduation, Nita moved to East St. Louis, Illinois where she lived with her older sister, Peggy. Nita quickly found a job as a secretary at the First National Bank in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. While attending church, Nita met a young man named Orvis Brown. They were soon married at the State Street Church of Christ in East St. Louis on October 3, 1959. They later found themselves in Topeka, Kansas where their daughter Susan was born in 1964, and then in Prairie Village, Kansas where their twin sons Tim and Steve were born in 1970. Nita stayed busy at home with the kids until they completed elementary school, and then she worked for almost 20 years in administrative roles in the Shawnee Mission school district.

Nita and Orvis recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Words cannot express how deeply she will be missed.

Survivors include her husband Orvis; son Tim Brown (Amy) of Overland Park, Kansas; son Steve Brown (Jennifer) of New Albany, OH; sister Peggy Sue McCasland of Fairview Heights, IL; and her four grandchildren, Carly, Riley, Zachary, and Hannah.

Nita was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Susan Brown.

A private family service will be held at Penwell-Gabel Olathe’s Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Nita's memory be made to Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, Inc.
