NICHOLAS R. SWAN
June 25, 1949 - February 23, 2016
"A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again." -Maya Angelou
Nicholas "Nick" R. Swan, amateur comedian, singer, story teller, and grill master, died on Tuesday, February 23, 2016.
Nick was a man of many words, always speaking from his heart and soul. He cherished his family dearly, always providing loving support and memorable words of wisdom. His boisterous personality easily transformed strangers into friends. He was the ultimate entertainer, joyously engaging others with his ready wit and a story or a song for every occasion. Nick will always be remembered for readily sharing his opinion and his knack for telling it like it is. He was a master cook in the kitchen and on the grill and he wore his apron with pride. He could often be found on the golf course telling tall tales and working on his next hole in one. His heart of gold and his love of life were cherished by his family and friends. Nick could sell ice to Eskimos, but his heart was in helping those in need, especially fellow Vietnam veterans.
Nick's wife, Mary Carol, was the love of his life. He adored his children, Stephanie Swan, Sarah Swan Williams (Trent), Jason Appino (Jackie), and Jessica Swan, and his beautiful grandchildren, Nicholas Mattox and Ava and Ella Appino. He also leaves behind his brothers, Bob Swan, Jr., and Terry and David Wood, as well as many other family members and friends. Nick was a lover of animals, especially his beloved dog, Bella. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Marvie Swan and Rosemary Swan, his brothers, Jeff and Richard Wood, and his sister, Mimi Wood Bronson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Kansas City Pet Project or the charity of your choice. On Nick's behalf, we ask that you take a moment to hug your loved ones and friends or walk in the woods for a moment, an hour, or a day. Time waits for no one.
The song is ended, but the melody lingers on in all of our hearts.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 2:00pm followed by a memorial service at 3:00pm at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 Blackbob Road, Olathe, Kansas.
