Newell G. GibbensNewell G. Gibbens, 84, of Olathe, passed away after a short illness, on October 4, 2006, at Olathe Medical Center, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2006, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. Services will follow at 11 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2006, at College Church of the Nazarene, Garrett Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Clinton, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be given to College Church of the Nazarene, 2020 E. Sheridan, Olathe, Kan., 66062.Newell was born in South English, Iowa, to Newell and Marie Gibbens on September 17, 1922. He grew up in central Iowa, graduated from North English High School, and attended Vennard College before serving in WWII in Alaska. He married Betty Pixler on July 24, 1944. They lived in Marengo, Iowa before moving to Clinton, Iowa in 1963, where he retired from Dairy Pack after thirty years. Following retirement, he moved to Good Samaritan Towers in Olathe, and more recently to the Good Samaritan Center here in Olathe. He was a member of College Church of the Nazarene, where he served as class director for the Friendship Sunday School class for a number of years. As an avid photographer, he loved to take pictures of the places he traveled, sunsets, and especially of family gatherings. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty in 1975. He is survived by daughters, Ina Rutledge (John) of Nashville, Tenn., Wanda Borger (Butch), Des Moines, Iowa; and son, Lyle Gibbens (Jan) of Olathe. He is also survived by sisters, Esther Reed of Walla Walla, Washington, Audrey Parry (Dave) of Los Angeles, Calif.; and brother, David Gibbens (Marie) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
