Muriel Bernice Wood
Muriel Bernice Wood, 94, of Olathe, KS, died October 1, 2008 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Wood, born June 14, 1914, in Clay Center, Kansas, was the daughter of Alvin Luther Williamson and Ida Lena McKee. She grew up in Clay Center, resided briefly in Seattle, Washington, and attended high school at The Bishop's School in La Jolla, CA. She graduated in 1935 from the University of Kansas where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She married Dr. Douglas Hodges Wood, of Madison, WI, on May 3, 1939. Dr. Wood preceded her in death in 1984.
Dr. and Mrs. Wood lived in Pittsburg, KS. Mrs. Wood left her Pittsburg home of more than 60 years, moving to Olathe in 2006. She was a world traveler, visiting most US states and touring more than 25 other countries. She served many years as a Republican precinct committeewoman. She was a past-president of the CJ Chapter of PEO in Pittsburg.
She is survived by her four children: son Lauren Wood and his wife Gail and son Gordon Wood and his wife Christine, both of Overland Park, KS; son Keith Wood and his wife Barbara of Lawrence, KS; and daughter Muriel Lee Wood Beaver of Olathe. She also has nine grandchildren, Kirstin Esau and her husband Jon of Richmond, KS; Andrea Rife and her husband Rob of Olathe; Erin Lassey and her husband Vance of Holton, KS; Megan Duhaime and her husband Kevin of Manchester, NH; Angela Kennedy and her husband William of Sammamish, WA, Douglas Wood of Durant, OK; Justin Wood of Redmond, WA; Joe Beaver and his wife Rebecca of Morris, MN; and Jim Beaver and his wife Marissa of Colorado Springs, CO; and ten great-grandchildren: David and Isaiah Esau, Mackenna, Brooke, Paige and Blake Rife; Luke Lassey; Matthew and Weston Kennedy; and Margaret Beaver.
The family suggests memorials to either The Kansas University Endowment Association general scholarship fund or the Legacy Society Endowment at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg. Memorials for either may also be sent in care of the funeral home.
