Miriam L. Jones, age 93, passed away September 18, 2014. She was born March 7, 1921 to Finnish immigrants, Charles and Ida (Kaski) Leppa, in Duluth, Minnesota. Growing up as the daughter of a shoe repairman, they lived in a lovely two-bedroom home in the hills of Duluth.
She enjoyed ice skating and skiing in her youth and graduating from Duluth Central High School in 1939. She attended St. Luke's Training School for Nurses in Duluth earning her RN degree. She served as a nurse in the Navy where she met her husband Jesse B. Jones. They were married on January 12, 1947 and had five children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, three sisters, six brothers, her husband and daughter, Doreen.
Survived by her children: Roger Jones (Daniella), Susan Seay (Alex), Kathleen Cromer (Jon) and Carol Trevino (Oscar). She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Mom was always an active, independent go-getter who devoted her life to her family. She will be remembered for her great skills: sewing (we four girls always had beautiful matching dresses for Easter each year), crochet, quilting (made quilts for all her children and grandchildren), rug weaving (we can see all our old clothing repurposed in her rag-rugs), gardening (we all loved the fresh vegetables each year), canning, baking (yummy pies and we all loved the Cardamon bread), ballon wine experiments, avid walking, bowling (she saved a man's life with CPR at the bowling alley in Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota), writing diaries (used as reference in her autobiography "What Makes Me Tick").
After traveling the world extensively while Dad was in the Air Force, they settled in Topeka, Kansas. After they retired, they moved back to Minnesota, which Mom considered "Heaven on Earth." They lived in Hoyt Lakes until Dad's passing at which time she moved to Hibbing to be near friends and her beloved Cedar Valley Church. When she began experiencing health issues, she moved to Bishop Spencer Place in Kansas City, Missouri to be near her children.
Her final resting place will be at Park Hill Cemetery in Duluth, Minnesota where she will join her husband, sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Harry Hendrickson, and we are certain they are all enjoying steaming cups of coffee together.
A special thanks to Dr. Peter Holt for such great care over the years, her caregivers and staff (her second family really) at Bishop Spencer Place, who always showed such respect, compassion and love. They always went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure her needs (and ours) were met. For that we will be eternally grateful.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 21 at 2:30 PM in the Madison Living Room at Bishop Spencer Place, 4301 Madison Ave, Kansas City, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Cavanaugh Benevolent Care Endowment Fund, Bishop Spencer Place, 4301 Madison Ave, Kansas City, MO 64111.
