Michaela Lyndi Erickson

December 13, 1995 — February 27, 2017

Our Free Spirit

Michaela Lyndi Erickson was born December 13th, 1995 in Burlington, KS to Michael and Tricia Erickson. She lived her short 21 years to their fullest, traveling anywhere from Italy to Mexico, and passed on February 27th, 2017. Her parents, Michael & Tricia, and her two sisters, Marissa and Miranda, will continue to love her and honor her memory in the years to come, as well as her grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and niece. Her generous, beautiful spirit will never be forgotten…

From her first breath, Michaela Lyndi Erickson was our little free spirit, full of life and creativity. She was a little whirlwind with her hair always in frazzled disarray. When we remember Michaela, we see her swinging upside down in our maple tree. And we remember how crushed she was when that tree died. We remember teaching her to talk in the back of our mini-van as mom ran errands. She was so determined to talk earlier than everyone else. And we remember her running, bent over, arms behind her way up in the air, squawking like a bird at Miranda's basketball games.

I think that when I stand in silence in a field of prairie grass and rustling leaves with the Kansas wind blowing fiercely, I will think of her. The wind blowing crazily will remind me of her wild spirit. Wanting to try everything from cheerleading and soccer to weight-lifting, but not sticking with any one activity for very long. Such an adventurous, free spirit, she had to sample every dish the buffet of life had to offer.
Michaela loved to bake, and she was good at it. You could see her eyes light up and her spirit swell when she made that perfect batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. And you could see her frustration when they weren't perfect. Sunday breakfast was "Experiment Day" with Tricia and Michaela furiously looking up new recipes for muffins, tarts, and scones. Some of our fondest moments of Michaela were in the kitchen.

An avid reader, Michaela could always be found with a book or a kindle, nestled up on a couch, reading furiously. Fairy tales, romances, mysteries, or vampires, she read it all. Early on we could see her creative talents come to life in the vivid stories she could tell, and in the captivating flow of her writing.

Michaela's love language was, without a doubt, gift-giving. She shared her passion for reading with her nephews and niece through this. Every birthday, Christmas, or just on some random occasion, she would painstakingly search for the perfect book for her beloved nephews and niece. And she would watch with glee as they opened the precious books.

Perhaps the thing we'll remember, and miss, the most about our baby girl and baby sister, is her smile. For through that smile shone her beautiful soul.

George R. R. Martin said wisely: "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies… the man who never reads lives only one." Michaela has simply moved on to another one of her thousand lives.
