Michael P. Zobkiw, P.E.-January 12, 1945 to April 8, 2012.
Michael P. Zobkiw was born January 12, 1945, in London England at the end of World War II and left this world after a long illness on April 8, 2012.
Mike was greeted in heaven by his son, Douglas Morgan Zobkiw, who passed away on June 26, 2011, from whose death Mike never really recovered. He is also being welcomed by his mother, Freda Zobkiw (nee Cloudy) and his father, Bohdan Zobkiw.
Mike is survived by Pamela Zobkiw, his wife of over 38 years, his son Derek Brady, his sister Sandra Gossett, granddaughters: Janaya Brady and Leanna Dawn Morgan Russell-Zobkiw, grandson: Devin Lee, nephews: Ryan and Brad Gossett.
Mike graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1962, where he has been active in his alumni association for the last 20 years. He attended K-State for one year where he pledged Tau Kappa Epsilon.
After leaving K-State he worked for the Federal Government as a surveyor for a few of years. He got a job at Leavenworth County as a surveyor. Mike Sachse, the County Engineer, agreed to let Mike take a semester off each year to study engineering. Mike graduated from Finley Engineering College and passed his EIT in 1972.
Mike and Pamela Maiden were married on 9/22/73.
Mike received his Professional Engineering License in Kansas in 1975, eventually he would become licensed in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. He was grandfathered for a Professional Surveyor License, his number was 61. Mike worked at Leavenworth County until 1975 when he took the County Engineer's job in Harvey County, KS. His son Douglas was born in Newton, KS. 1/26/77.
While at Harvey County, Mike was the recipient of the "Outstanding Engineering Project" award for a bridge replacement program he designed, initiated, and began implementation of while he was still county engineer. In 1978 Mike accepted the job of Assistant County Engineer in Johnson County, KS. and we moved to Olathe, KS.
After 3 years Mike went to work at B-G Engineering as office manager of their Olathe, KS. & Beatrice, NE. offices. He left that position to open his own firm, Michael Engineering. His later jobs included bridge engineer for KCK, design and construction engineer for L. G. Barcus & Sons, design and project engineer for MAWC.
Most of the time Michael Engineering was alive and well during these career changes, with bridge inspections, small bridge design and utility work.
Mike worked hard to give a good home and security to his family and he deserved the rest when he officially retired in 2009. Mike's health was failing by then and Doug became his best friend and helper until Doug passed away.
During all of the job changes we never moved from the original home we purchased in Olathe.
Mike enjoyed fishing and was planning on taking a fishing trip to Table Rock this spring with Derek, his brother-in-law Rick and his nephews Ryan and Brad, but it was not to be. He was able to watch March Madness this year and was proud of the Jayhawks reaching the championship game, although he was disappointed with the results.
We were Chiefs season ticket holders for over 27 years through the good years and the bad, and just gave them up last year.
When the boys were growing up he attended all the games they were in whether it be baseball, soccer, basketball or tennis, was always proud to see their accomplishments.
We enjoyed traveling with the boys and with extended family.
After our son, Doug, passed away I think Mike had a broken heart and had lost the will to live.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 11:00am at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Blackbob, Olathe,KS, where the family will receive friends an hour prior to service time.
