Michael Roy Kern, 43, of Olathe, KS, a Traffic Motorcycle Police Officer, passed away suddenly Tues. Jan. 20th from an apparent heart attack.
Michael was born March 29, 1971, in Kansas City, MO to Marvin Roy and Kathy Rae Kern. He graduated from Truman High School in Independence, MO in 1989 and the Midwest Regional Police Academy in 1998.
While in Cass County he was a DARE Instructor, member of Missouri Tactical Officers Association, and voted officer of the year by his peers in 2000. He was promoted on to rank of Corporal in 2001. Michael was hired on by the Olathe Police Department in Oct. 2001. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police as well as a Field Training Officer. He was transferred to the Traffic Unit in Dec. 2006. Through the years he received numerous letters of appreciation and commendation for his service. An excerpt from his Personal History Statement states, "I strive to be the best at what I choose to do. I am a well-liked and well respected associate and have been my entire career. I work well with others and I am committed to do my best and give 100% all of the time....I love my job and what my job stands for."
He is survived by his wife of eight years, Denise (Webster) Kern; children Derek Michael, Darci Ranee and Kyndall Lynn Kern and his parents Marvin and Kathy Kern.
He is preceded in death by maternal grandparents, John Martin and Rae Jeanette Hedrick and paternal grandparents, Marvin L and Peggy J Kern
