Max Clay Mcmillan

June 2, 1941 — July 28, 2022

Max Clay McMillian – dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away in his sleep at home in Olathe, Kansas on July 28, 2022. Max graduated from high school in Rapid City, South Dakota, and then attended the University of Northern Colorado. Max earned his master's degree in education administration from the University of Colorado. Max spent his 31-year career at the Boulder Valley Public School. Throughout his career, Max was a beloved teacher, inspired coach, and dedicated administrator.

He worked at Baseline Jr. High as a teacher/coach, Fairview High School as principal, Lafayette Middle School in the Administration Office as the Assistant Director of Secondary Education and Director of Activities and Athletics. His career also included serving as principal at Angevine Middle School and Southern Hills.

During his career with BVPS, Mas also worked in the assessment and development program for the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals. He also served as the Director of Assessment and Development for the Colorado Association of School Administrators. His passion for education influenced students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.

In retirement, Max moved to Kansas and stayed busy with hobbies, friends, and family. To us, he was known as Huna, a name that captured his true essence: THE BIG KAHUNA. He had a larger-than-life personality and took his role as a grandparent with gusto: playing, teaching, coaching, and feeding them Italian food. Huna was happiest when he had his wife, boys, and their families around a dinner table enjoying each other. Huna also spent his time playing softball, golfing, attending concerts, dining out, boogie boarding, and traveling the world. If Huna was not on a trip, he was planning one. He had a curiosity about the world that was contagious.

He was a man of his word. He never lost his coach voice or presence. Our world was/is a better place because of Coach McMillan, Mr. McMillan, Max, Pop and Huna.

His parents Ida and Winford Duff McMillan precede Max in death. He is survived by his wife Marsha, his sons Matt (Elaina), Jonpaul (Linda) and Shane (Perri) as well as his 4 grandchildren: Porter, Tatum, Brenden and Pali.

The family will be leaving Huna's ashes in one of his favorite places – the waves off the shore of Maui. Mahalo
