In loving memory of Maryanna Bell Nerney, 84, who passed away peacefully in her home at Maggie's Place, Overland Park, KS on January 27, 2024. Maryanna was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1939, in Denver, Colorado to Charles N. and Irene Burr Bell.
Although she was born in Denver, she was raised in a mining town, Camp Bird Mine, in Ouray, Colorado. Her journey through life was a testament to the enduring spirit of a woman shaped by the rugged beauty of Colorado. She embraced the scenic landscapes of her childhood, fostering a love for the mountains and lakes that stayed with her throughout her life.
After high school, in Golden, CO, she further enhanced her studies by getting an Associate Degree at Colorado Women's College. In 2001, she married Tom Nerney, after a short courtship of 21 years. They enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally, but a favorite was the Lake of the Ozarks. Maryanna still holds the record for the longest ski run on one ski! They were both fond of their cats and dogs, and Maryanna was a true animal lover.
As a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Maryanna's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She devoted time studying the Bible and volunteering her time working at the church. She was a faithful member of the P.E.O., a philanthropic organization that celebrates the advancement of women with educational scholarships, grants, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College. Her compassionate nature left a lasting impact on the community.
Maryanna had a very successful career at American Fidelity Assurance for over 20 years, where she made many lifelong friends.
As a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, she radiated warmth and kindness to all who knew her. Her wisdom and humor was enjoyed by all. From nurturing her children with unwavering care, to creating cherished moments with grandchildren, her legacy will be felt throughout the generations.
Whether on the bowling lanes, the hiking trails, water skiing or cheering on her beloved Denver Broncos, her joyous spirit and nurturing heart left an enduring mark on those fortunate enough to be part of her life's journey.
Maryanna is survived by her husband, Tom Nerney, daughters Julie Wojtas (Tom) and Lisa Kane (Dennis), stepdaughters Susie Graham (Billy) and Sandy Niesen (Scott). Her grandchildren, who adored her, Logan and Cierra Kane, Veronika Wojtas, William, Katie and Sarah Graham, and Zoe and Maggie Niesen.
Memorial Service will be held at her church on February 17, 2024, at 11:00. Lunch will be served after the service.
