Mary McVey Newcomer, 86, died on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Bishop Spencer Place where she made her home in recent years.
A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Mary was married to Warren J. Newcomer on April 10, 1943. They celebrated 50 years of marriage before Warren passed away in 1993. Mary and Warren were the parents of four children. Their daughter Mary Lynn died July 4, 1966 at the age of nineteen. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Carole and Dick Stephens of Prairie Village, her son and daughter-in-law Warren J. Newcomer, Jr. "Ren" and Theresa of Topeka and Jeffrey J. Newcomer "Jeff" of Prairie Village.
She leaves four grandchildren; Shana Stephens Murray of Minneapolis, Mary Lynn Stephens Thiessen of Leawood, Margaret Susan Newcomer "Maggie" of Kansas City and Warren J. Newcomer, III "John" of Chicago. She also leaves five great grandchildren: Henry, Elizabeth, Peter and Tommy Murray and Caroline Thiessen.
Mary was the daughter of Rose and Karl McVey. She had two sisters, the late Rose Allison McDonnell and the late Betty Martin Vincent. Mary attended Border Star School, Southwest High School and the University of Kansas where she was president of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
Mary and Warren were founding members in 1948 of St. Ann Catholic Church. Mary's other associations included the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri, the Children's Relief Association of Mercy Hospital and the Westport Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Through the years Mary and Warren enjoyed the Saddle and Sirloin Club, Homestead Country Club, Mission Hills Country Club, the River Club and the Kansas City Country Club.
Friends and family are invited to a memorial reception on Sunday, February 21st from 4pm to 6pm at The Kansas City Country Club, Mission Hills, Kansas.
Mary's children want to express their deep appreciation to Sharon Pace, Director of Windsor Care and to all Mary's loving caregivers, especially Natasha Strickland and Chandelin Chase. The gift of friendship given Mary by both residents and staff at Bishop Spencer Place will long be remembered.
