Mary Kathryn "Kay" Kavanaugh passed away May 21, 2010 in Lawrence, KS.
Kay was born on August 28, 1917 in Valley Falls, Kansas to LeRoy S. and Cornelia E. Giles Barker. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1935 and Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1940.
Kay married Charles J. Kavanaugh on May 2, 1942 in Valley Falls. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1950.
Kay taught elementary school in Valley Falls for decades, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church and of Chapter HL of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Olathe.
Kay was preceded in death by her brothers L. Giles Barker and Lloyd William "Bill" Barker. She is survived by a son and daughter in law Giles and Peach Kavanaugh, Yorktown, VA; a daughter and son in law Kathy and Dick Sheldon, Ottawa, KS; two grandchildren Clay Sheldon and Ann (Greg) Brown; three great grandchildren Payton, Regan and James Sheldon. Her fourth great grandchild, "Baby" Brown is expected in July.
Cremation is planned with inurnment in Highland Park Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Women Valley Falls United Methodist Church 410 Frazier Ave., Valley Falls, KS 66088.
