Mary Ina Harrell

MARY INA HILTON SPRAGG HARRELL
August 12, 1942 – December 11, 2020
Mary I. Harrell, 78, of Olathe, was lifted into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 6:20 p.m. Friday, December 11, 2020. A resident of Good Samaritan Center, Olathe since March 20, 2019, the passing ended her long and courageous struggle with Parkinson's Disease.

Mary was born Wednesday, August 12, 1942 in rural Crane, Missouri, the second child of Verla M. (Wildman) and Barry C. Hilton. She graduated Crane High School with the Class of 1960, and married Eldon L. Spragg, a student at Baptist Bible College in nearby Springfield on Saturday, June 18 of that year. They became the parents of two children: Lynda Lea (1962) and Ronald Alan (1964). When Eldon was diagnosed with Glomerulonephritis kidney disease in 1965, the family moved to his native Detroit, Michigan for specialized medical treatment. He died at their home Monday, August 12, 1968.

Mary and Gregory J. Harrell were married Friday, July 24, 1970 in Detroit, after meeting as members of Temple Baptist Church there. The couple made their first home in Springfield, Missouri where Greg attended and taught at Baptist Bible College, and Mary worked as receptionist and PBX switchboard operator in the school's office. Later, she was employed by the Trust Department of First National Bank in Springfield. (She had previously worked in the Trust Department of the National Bank of Detroit, and for Display & Exhibit Co., Detroit).

Through their 50-years of marriage, the couple served in multiple religious and ministerial capacities in Missouri, Arizona, Michigan, and Kansas, and became the parents of two additional children, Barry (1971) and Stephanie (1978). Most recently, Mary completed a 22-year career with the Olathe schools, retiring as Technology Coordinator for the District's Food Production Center Friday, May 28, 2010.

An industrious and multi-talented individual, Mary excelled at sewing, pottery crafting, cross-stitch, and macrame, creating everything from custom draperies to bridal dresses and framed wedding invitations. Her all-consuming desire, however, was to use the contralto voice God had given her to sing songs of praise and worship. She was a choir member and soloist in every church where she and her family were members through the years. The two hymns she requested for her funeral service, Be Thou My Vision, and What a Day That Will Be, reflect her life-long desire to uplift and present Christ to others.

Mary is survived by her husband Greg, children Lynda L. (Jimmy) Reynolds, Birmingham, Alabama, Ronald A. (Robin) Spragg, Fort Worth, Texas, Barry (Gina) Harrell, Shawnee, Kansas, Stephanie (Christopher) Ballinger, Khatgal, Mongolia, thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister, Annabell Hilton of Nashua, New Hampshire. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Glen Robert Hilton.
